Barry Noble
Barry made his Doctor Who debut as an Egyptian warrior in the tenth episode of ' The Daleks Master Plan ' ( 1966 ) . He went on to play a Parisian in ' The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve ' ( 1966 ) and a patron of the Inferno club in ' The War Machines ' ( 1966 ) before becoming a Cyberman in ' The Moonbase ( 1967 ) .
Barry says " An agent rang me and said they were looking for tall people for Doctor Who and as I'm 5' 11" I seemed to fit what they wanted . I went along to Ealing Studios, tried the costume on and it fitted as much as you could get it fitted but it was pretty uncomfortable . You had to be let in and let out of the helmet and you couldn't see too well out of it, but the main thing was that it was very hot inside the suit . I used to wear a T-shirt underneath to soak up the perspiration and I had to change maybe a couple of T-shirts a day ."
Barry's other acting work at that time included uncredited appearances in the films ' Fahrenheit 451 ' ( 1966 ), ' Casino Royale ' ( 1967 ), ' Quatermass and the Pit ' ( 1967 ) and episodes of ' The Saint ', ' Man in a Suitcase ' and ' Adam Adamant Lives ! ' But within 18 months of playing a Cyberman he became a pop star with the single I've Got My Eyes On You .
He says " I'd come to London to be a hit recording artist and fallen into the acting work as a sideline . I signed a record contract with EMI in 1968 and recorded all my stuff for the next two years at Abbey Road, the same studios as The Beatles . I didn't really have a hit in this country but I had a few hits abroad and did a lot of shows on the continent . I was travelling around the world quite a lot and the singing career took up the next 15 years really . "
